Our Director, Tom, combines his skills as a physiotherapist with a qualification in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. This allows him to perform Diagnostic Ultrasound scanning, either as part of physiotherapy assessment, or as a standalone diagnostic session. Standard physiotherapy assessment is always completed prior to scanning, meaning that a likely diagnosis can be formulated but then is confirmed and investigated more accurately. An example of this would be that a tear in tendon is suspected following orthopaedic testing but the size, location and severity of the tear is then seen on scan. Diagnostic ultrasound scanning is incredibly useful in presentations where it is difficult to determine the cause of the pain – the whole area can be investigated and any changes to the structures can determine the likely cause of the pain.
This form of scan uses soundwaves to produce images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joints. From the image Tom is able to thoroughly investigate the painful area, looking for any changes present that correlate with your pain. A key benefit of this is that results are relayed to you in real-time, meaning you get a clearer and more accurate diagnosis within the session. A report on the results is then provided to you, for your records, and can be taken on to consultants if needed to inform the best course of action for your condition. Diagnostic ultrasound is safe, non-invasive and does not use harmful radiation.
Common conditions Diagnostic Ultrasound scanning is commonly used to investigate are:
- Sports injuries
- Rotator cuff related shoulder pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Bursitis
- Tendinitis/tendinopathy
- Growth-related disorders
- Nerve entrapments
- Rheumatological conditions
This is an incredibly popular service within the clinic and Tom works closely with other physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and GPs in the local area and regularly receives scan referrals from them. It is important to note, however, that you do not need a referral for a Diagnostic Ultrasound scan.
